Monday's Menu

So when I was a wee little pug, Mom tried dry dog food. It made me sick. So then she tried wet dog food to which I just turned my non-existent nose up at. The vet said I could be put on special food for the rest of my life...but Mom decided to do a little a research first. What she discovered is that lots of dog food has products that are hard to digest. So she decided to make all of my dog food. Except it's not really dog food, it's more of people food which is good since I don't consider myself a dog.

Besides the fact that this food is fantastic, I have no weight problems and my coat is always super soft. I've been healthy since she started making it. While it's not her favorite thing to do, she tries to make a lot at one time and keeps it refrigerated. When Lincoln came to live with us, she tried to feed him dog food too. Except his coat was rough and his stomach was easily upset. So she finally gave in and he gets to eat the good stuff too.

First, Mom adds some vegetables, usually green beans and carrots. I especially love the carrots.

Next, she adds some rice. Sometimes white, sometimes brown.

Then she cooks the meat. She changes it up using either turkey, beef, chicken or pork. I love them all, I'm not picky.

Finally, she mixes it all up and puts it in the fridge for later. Mom says I'm a lot of work but I'm pretty sure I'm worth it.

  2. Hey Minnie's Mom. :) I've toyed with the idea of cooking for my puggies too, but have always been concerned about making sure they get all the nutrients they need. I'm glad it's working out for you! How do you think it works out financially for you...more or less expensive than buying commercial dog food? Just curious. One of mine eats raw frozen, one eats kibble, and they cost me a BUNDLE. :) Spoiled rotten pugs.

  4. So cool Minnie! My tummy gets rumbly too, the only dog food I can eat is science diet. My mama is curious, how much do you eat at a serving? She is thinking of making some of this delicious human food for me!

  6. Boy are you two lucky puggies!
Hu-mom makes our own food, too. But we only eat raw. We have "glop" in the moring and raw, meaty bones for dinner! Glop is veggies, eggs, fruit, yogurt plus seasonings of ginger or whatever is around, molasses, apple cider vinegar and chucks it all into the food processor until it is "glop". The she adds oatmeal or brown rice, and raw ground turkey, chicken or beef. She packs it up in serving size freezer bags and makes enough to last about 3-4 weeks at a time. We are having very few allergy problems now, our weight is wonderful, too. Our favorite are the raw meaty bones. My fav is chicken, Mack eats anything!

  9. Our mom makes our food, too. Veggies and meat and rice. Sometimes she switches it up and uses quinoa, barley and oatmeal. Petunia is allergic to birdies, so we get fish or beef. We tried a lamb patty from Stella' and Chewie, but it made our tummies a little rumbly, so maybe no more lamb.

Our mom makes a giant batch and freezes. She got those little Ziploc cup containers, the ones with the blue lid. After she makes a big old batch, she puts it all in containers, keeps out some for the week and freezes the rest. She even bought a chest freezer so she'd have enough room for it all. That can be helpful when you run out of time.

Oh, and mom says to make friends with a hunter. Venison is super yummy and no worries about chemicals or antibiotics or anything! Our mom gets the parts that humans don't necessarily want to eat and cooks that up for us. Sometimes, you can get that for free, too!

  10. Hi Minnie!
Your Mom sure loves you & Lincoln!

When I was a puppy Mom fed me science diet puppy food. Since the first ingredient is corn, it started to make my hair thin & fall out. Now I get duck & potato dry dog food (light formula because you know how pugs can eat) & doing great!

    Hugs,
    Suki

  14. can anyone tell me the right size of portion, maybe proportionate to the size of your pugs?
My pugs weigh around 20-25 lbs. each ( yes they are big-boned) and I would like to get them down a few lbs.

  15. Pugsx4, it will depend on the ingredients you use and the ratio of protein to other foods (grains, veggies). But a good place to start is a cup of food a day. You can adjust up and down as you need to. There are four pugs here, two seniors, two juniors. Everybody gets one cup of food a day, plus a few treats and a tablespoon of yogurt with a few blueberries at night. The juniors also get a half of cup of oatmeal and half a large apple. They needed to gain some weight which they have, so the oatmeal will be tapered off soon.

  18. That was exactly the same food we used to cook for Gus! Unfortunately, we had to switch due to his allergies. It was the BEST feeling knowing exactly what he was eating. Kudos to you, I know how much hard work it is to prepare homemade meals!

  19. Minnie... *sigh* you are definitely 'worth it'... my 2 cents...

  20. Surely you and Lincoln have room for just ONE MORE PUG at your house? Because I'm on my way!

    Later!
